HarborLink Support FAQ's

Q: What Do I Need to Use HarborLink's Service?

A: A wirelessly enabled Laptop or Handheld Computer. Our sites support 802.11b wireless clients, and in many cases 802.11a. See our Locations page to view the standards supported at your favorite site!

Q: How Do I Connect to HarborLink's Service?
A:

To access the HarborLink Network, you must configure your Wi-Fi 802.11b or 802.11a enabled laptop or handheld by setting the SSID (or network identifier) in your wireless device to 'harborlink'. If your wireless adapter is configured with "any" as your SSID, your device can synchronize to the HarborLink Network with no changes.

Instructions on how to set the SSID vary depending on the brand and model of wireless network card you are using. Many wireless adapters allow you to set your SSID via an icon on your start bar. However, if your card does not have this function, Windows users can follow these steps:

Windows 9x, ME, or 2000:

1. Right-click on "Network Neighborhood" and select "properties". If "Network Neighborhood" does not appear on your desktop, open your control panel and double-click on "Network".
2. Under the "Configuration" tab, arrow down until you see the name of your wireless adapter. Highlight the name of your adapter and then select "Properties"
3. Click on the "Advanced" tab. Under the "Property" window, locate and click on "SSID" or "Network Name" (depends on wireless brand).
4. Under Value, type "harborlink" (all lower case, no quotation marks!)
5. Click "OK" twice
6. You should be connected, provided your computer does not require you to reboot. If a reboot is needed, you should be connected upon the completion of the reboot.

For Windows XP users:

1. Right-click the network connection icon in the notification area (right side of Start bar), and then click View Available Wireless Networks.
2. In "Connect to Wireless Network", under "Available Networks", click the wireless network that you want to connect to. In this case, it will be "harborlink".
3. Click "Connect".
4. Enjoy HarborLink's High-Speed Internet!

Q: Where Can I Get Wireless Hardware?

A: Wireless adapters are readily available from almost any retail store that carries computer equipment, including Best Buy, CompUSA, and many others. Also, many notebook and handhelds come equipped with wireless built in.
