Wi-Fi event to celebrate city's role in free Internet access

Dayton Daily News

The city of Dayton's foray into free municipal wireless Internet service officially kicks off Friday with a Wireless Dayton Day celebration, and if you're curious about Wi-Fi, it might be the perfect time to come downtown and check it out.

Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, is a system for providing Internet service to wireless devices such as laptop computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs). Wi-Fi service is typically available in small areas called hot spots. Airports often provide hot spots for business travelers who need to stay connected, and some restaurants and similar businesses offer hot spots to attract tech-savvy young customers.

Dayton is introducing one of the country's first municipally-run Wi-Fi hot zones, according to Bill Hill, the city's director of information and technology services. Working with the private Internet service provider Harborlink Network, the city is providing free Internet service over about a one-square mile area downtown.
