DAYTON | The city of
Dayton's free downtown Wi-Fi
network is available, and
DaytonDailyNews.com content
will be available to users
of the service.
The city announced late last
year that it would create
the network in a partnership
with HarborLink Network,
LLC.
Dayton's system is the first
public-private partnership
in the nation for a city's
"hot spot," which allows
people in the area to
connect to the Internet for
free. It is sponsored by
advertising.
The network covers one
square mile of downtown. It
includes RiverScape,
Fifth-Third Field, Sinclair
Community College and the
Oregon Historic District.
The area is roughly bordered
by Interstate 75, Fifth
Street, Keowee Street and
Monument Avenue.
The system is still being
worked on, so reception may
be weak in areas.
The Dayton Daily News will
provide news, entertainment,
information, sales
representation and
advertising content for the
network's home page in a
partnership agreement with
HarborLink. HarborLink is
providing the technical
infrastructure for the
system.
"As the region's top local
Web site,
DaytonDailyNews.com is a
natural partner for this
effort," Kevin Riley,
general manager of online
operations of Cox Ohio
Publishing, said Thursday.
"Users of the Internet
demand top-notch
information, and that's what
we provide."
HarborLink President Rick
Tangeman said, "We are
thrilled to have
DaytonDailyNews.com
involved. The city's
wireless network will make
information from the
region's leading Web site
easily available to users.
This is a one-of-a-kind
project for the city, a
newspaper company and a
technology company." |
